ST. LOUIS – Three new solar facilities are online, providing 500 megawatts of energy to commercial and residential customers in Missouri.
Ameren Missouri made the announcement last week. The three facilities, which cost approximately $950 million, are expected to generate enough energy to power 92,000 homes each year.
Oddly enough, two of the facilities are located in Illinois. Ameren Missouri purchased the 150-MW Cass County Renewable Energy Center from Savion Energy while the project was still under construction. The 1,700-acre facility is located just outside Beardstown.
The 150-MW Boomtown Renewable Energy Center is located approximately 125 east of St. Louis in White County, Illinois.
The third solar facility, the 200-MW Huck Finn Renewable Energy Center, was built along the border of Audrain and Ralls counties. Ameren Missouri purchased the facility from EDF Renewables while it was under construction.
The Cass County and Boomtown facilities will serve the utility company's Renewable Solutions program, allowing large businesses or organizations to increase their use of renewable energy. According to Ameren Missouri, the participating companies contribute a portion of the costs of construction of these facilities. In exchange, the companies receive renewable energy credits.
Ameren Missouri has a stated goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2045.
