JOPLIN, Mo. — Downtown Joplin businesses are showcasing Christmas spirit through creativity.
It's all part of the downtown holiday decorating competition through the Downtown Joplin Alliance.
This year, 22 businesses decorated their buildings using the theme “Retro Christmas.”
On Friday (12/20), awards were presented to winners of the competition. One of them was Urban Escape Salon and Spa, located at Second and Main Street. Its theme for this year: “How The Grinch Stole Christmas".
Owner Skyeler Frett says they've been in downtown Joplin for two years — their goal is to be more involved in the downtown happenings. Burgundi Tarrant is a nail tech for the business. She played a key role in the artistic design, with a little help from a loved one.
"Actually, my aunt and I kind of brainstormed together and she helped me do the windows and we spent about a week painting the windows. So, I was like it absolutely feels amazing to be rewarded — especially like our artwork — and then to receive "Most Creative" — like that really feeds the artist in us for sure. It feels good,” said Burgundi Tarrant & Skyeler Frett with Urban Escape Salon and Spa.
Four winners were awarded trophies and bragging rights in the following categories:
- Best Use of Theme (Retro Christmas): Jonathan Leach Keller Williams Agency — 521 South Main Street
- Best Use of Lights: Alchemist Haven — 1331 East 4th Street
- Most Creative: Urban Escape Salon and Spa — 107 West Second Street
- People's Choice: Christman Lofts — 501 South Main Street
