ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis man is in custody after driving a stolen vehicle across the river from Illinois and striking a city worker while fleeing police in Downtown St. Louis.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the incident unfolded on Thursday, Dec. 12. The city’s Real Time Crime Center received a notice from a license plate reader around 1:30 p.m. of a Lexus reported stolen from a Chevrolet dealership in O’Fallon, Illinois.
Police said officers began pursuing the driver, Jorden M. Owens, 22, after he sped through a red light.
Police spiked the stolen Lexus, but Owens kept driving the vehicle in a reckless manner, weaving in and out of oncoming traffic at high speed.
Owens struck a city worker near the intersection of South 7th and Cerre streets and hit the worker’s truck as well. The city worker suffered a broken ankle.
Police said Owens lost control of the Lexus and stopped along a curb. Owens attempted to flee on foot but was caught while trying to climb a fence.
The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Owens with aggravated fleeing causing physical injury, second-degree assault, armed criminal action, first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle, resisting arrest for a felony, and leaving the scene of an accident. A scheduled court date was not available online as of Sunday evening.
