JOPLIN, Mo. — Saturday marked a big day for Joplin's Harry M. Cornell Arts and Entertainment Complex.
A "Winter Welcome" Makers Market highlighted local artisans. The event is a collaboration between "Connect2Culture" and "Spiva Center for the Arts."
12 local vendors showcased their own holiday art to those in attendance.
Other activities included creating free "make and take" ornaments and snowflakes.
Guests could also purchase handcrafted goods from local artisans at the Maker's Market - ranging from glass photography - ornaments - cards and jewelry.
"It brings people from all over the community. And there's something for everyone that was very important when we were trying to put this activity together. Not only do we get to shine a light on some amazing artists from our community selling their handmade goods today, we also need to spotlight performances," said Heather Lesmeister, Spiva Center for the Arts Exec. Director.
The event concluded with "An Evening in Kringle City" - a festive holiday-themed performance filled with music and storytelling from Santa Claus himself.
Meanwhile, the complex ushered in some new features.
A new canopy has been added above the stage at the "Leggett and Platt Green."
Joplin High School's premier show choir "Sound Dimension" was the first to perform under the canopy.
In the past - outdoor performances had to be paused due to bad weather - in order to protect audio equipment.
They also had to build a temporary canopy in the past.
New state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment have also been added.
"We're really passionate about working together and just creating events that invite as many people as possible - because we believe that the arts are for everyone. We want to bring more arts to more people. And so, this canopy is going to do just that as well. And so, and it's a beautiful addition," said Emily Frankoski, Connect2Culture Exec. Dir.
Plans are already in the works for future shows on the Leggett and Platt Green stage.
