JAY, Okla. - Delaware County Sheriff-elect Ray Thomas was appointed on Monday as interim sheriff following Sheriff James Beck's resignation.
David Poindexter, Delaware County chairman, said Thomas will take a second oath of office in January when all newly elected officials are sworn in for the new term. Monday's appointment is to finish out Beck's term.
Thomas garnered 1,898 votes in the June election, compared to Beck’s 1,339 votes to unseat the sitting sheriff and take over as the county's top law enforcement officer.
"I am filled with immense pride and gratitude," Thomas told a standing-room-only crowd of supporters. It is a testament to your trust in me to serve and protect this community."
Thomas's focus will be on collaboration, transparency, and community engagement. He said a deep commitment to the safety and well-being of our community will guide his decision.
"We will work together to address the issues that matter most to you," Thomas said. "Whether it is crime prevention, youth engagement, or mental health support, I believe we can make a difference when working together."
Thomas pointed to the community's challenges and promised to approach each one with "integrity and an open mind."
Law enforcement must be a reflection of the values of the community it serves, he said.
Beck assumed the county’s top law enforcement spot on Dec. 1, 2021, when then-sheriff Mark Berry resigned. Beck served the remainder of Berry’s term and was elected sheriff in June 2022. In that race, Beck defeated Thomas with 2,553 votes and 2,374 votes.
