Driver gets 30-day sentence in 2021 crash that killed Drury student
Marjorie Dewitt was sentenced to 30 days in jail for a 2021 crash that killed 21-year-old Mercedes Luna, after entering an Alford plea agreement for first-degree involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A Greene County judge has sentenced Marjorie Dewitt from Ozark to 30 days in jail on Tuesday, July 22, in the 2021 crash that killed 21-year-old Mercedes Luna following an Alford plea agreement.
Dewitt entered an Alford Plea for first-degree involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. In an Alford Plea, the defendant does not admit guilt but concedes that there is enough evidence to support a likely conviction.
Her case was set to go to a jury trial on Monday, July 21, before an Alford plea agreement was reached last week.
According to online court documents, on May 7, 2021, Dewitt was attempting to pass a FedEx truck on the southbound lane of State Highway 125 in Greene County and forced Luna to swerve into a ditch to avoid a collision with Dewitt's vehicle. Luna then lost control of her car during the maneuver and was hit by the FedEx truck.
Luna was driving to Rogersville as a student-teacher at Drury University when she died in the crash.
On November 4, 2021, Dewitt turned herself in to authorities with her attorney, but pleaded not guilty.
