"Get multiple estimates," on checking your furnace BBB recommends as temps drop

JOPLIN, Mo. — Colder temps will be back soon enough. If you're looking for someone to check your furnace for you, the Better Business Bureau wants to make sure you don't get taken advantage of.

First, research a business or contractor and make sure they're licensed and insured. Last year, the organization received more than 6,000 complaints from customers where the work was substandard, unfinished, or there were unexpected expenses.

"Try to still get multiple estimates. Three is a good idea. And ask those questions about the details. If it's on a weekend, is this going to cost more? Is it after hours, is it going to cost more? Make sure you understand everything in that estimate in the contract before you sign," said Pamela Hernandez, BBB.

The Better Business Bureau has plenty of information on its website here.
