JOPLIN, Mo. — The U.S. Department of Labor awards more than $99 million in workforce development grants.
The Workforce Investment Board of Southwest Missouri in Joplin will receive $1.2 million dollars from the Youth Build Program.
The grant is designed to prepare young people from 16 to 24 for in-demand careers, with a special focus on construction apprenticeship.
Students will split their time between earning a high school diploma in the classroom, and hands-on training — building and rehabilitating affordable housing in their communities.
The program will support students throughout their training and for 12 months after graduation — providing help securing transportation, childcare, and health care — along with work attire and protective equipment.
Training will be available for other in-demand industries like manufacturing, information technology, hospitality, and health care.
The Employment and Training Administration first announced funding availability back on July 18.
71 organizations across 31 states are set to receive grants.
