Holiday shoppers scramble for last minute gifts

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Last-minute holiday shoppers in Springfield were scrambling this weekend to take advantage of the last few days before the holiday.   

Springfield Mercantile Co. on Commercial Street has seen an increase in shoppers both locally and from out of state.  

“It's been really busy lately, which has been wonderful,” Carrie Sherman said. “We're kind of selling out of everything.” 

Sherman works at the mercantile and says they have gifts that can appeal to everyone.  

“We have a lot of linen. We even have shaving stuff for men. We have lots of skin care and candles and just a lot of cleaning stuff, a lot of brushes,” Sherman said. 

Sherman says there is so much to offer on C-Street, especially when it comes to holiday gifts and shopping. 

“It's super important to shop local,” Sherman said. “You know, you're helping families buy gifts for their families.” 

OzarksFirst also checked in with shoppers across town at the Primrose Marketplace. 

Tina Brooks has been out shopping for her seven grandchildren and other family members since 11 a.m. Sunday.   

“There's people everywhere,” Brooks said. “Lines are all the way back in the back of the store. But, you know, 'tis the season.” 

Brooks says the day is a tradition they look forward to every year.  

“Me and my aunt and have a Christmas tradition that we always go Christmas shopping the Sunday before Christmas and get all of our last-minute things done,” Brooks said. 

While the holiday rush is nearly over for 2024, Brooks offered some advice to navigate the holiday season for next year.  

“My first tip would be don't be a last minute shopper, but here I am,” Brooks said. 

Stores like Walmart and Target will be open on Christmas Eve, in case you need any truly last-minute supplies.
