An undocumented non-citizen, living in Joplin, has been arrested in connection to a hit and run over the weekend that has left a teenager fighting for his life in an ICU.
43-year-old Miguel Gaspar-Diaz was taken into custody for Assault 2nd, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Tampering with Physical Evidence, Drive on Right of Roadway and Driving while License Suspended.
In a probable cause statement, he admitted to drinking alcohol at a friend’s house in Carthage prior to the accident.
Gasper-Diaz also admitted to hitting the juvenile male victim with his vehicle and driving a few hundred feet before stopping and removing him from the hood of his car and placing him in the ditch.
He then admitted to then fleeing the scene without attempting to contact law enforcement or exchange information with the other party involved.
Gasper-Diaz is being held on no bond. Local authorities have also notified Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Police say Gaspar-Diaz is also an Undocumented Non-Citizen and has ties and the ability to flee to friends and family in California and Colorado.
The teenage victim, Braxton Thrasher, remains in critical condition in a Springfield hospital.
His place of employment, Domino’s, is doing a fundraiser for him next week.
There is also a GoFundMe for Braxton here
