Man gets 8 years in prison for killing mother’s fiancé

ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis man who shot and killed his mother's fiancé in 2022 appeared in court on Monday and pleaded guilty to an amended charge.

Prosecutors with the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office said Joshua D. Jackson, 33, killed Jeffrey Cook on Jan. 29, 2022, at Cook's home in the 2800 block of Chariton Street, located in the city's Mt. Pleasant neighborhood.

Police and prosecutors said Jackson shot Cook during an argument. Officers found Cook inside the residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Cook was rushed to the hospital but died. He was 60.

An eyewitness told police that Jackson threatened to harm them and their children if they spoke with the police.

Jackson had been set for trial later this week in St. Louis Circuit Court for first-degree murder and four other felony charges.

However, prosecutors agreed to amend the murder charge to voluntary manslaughter in exchange for Jackson's plea. The other felonies were also dismissed.

The circuit court judge approved the plea agreement and sentenced Jackson to eight years in state prison.
