KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 14-year-old Marshfield freshman was surprised earlier today when a special guest visited the Children's Mercy Hospital, Taylor Swift.
Matney Crawford was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in September of this year.
"We thought she had a back-to-school virus and we were shocked by the diagnosis," said Ashley Crawford, Matney's mother.
Matney was flown to Children's Mercy Hospital immediately.
After three rounds of chemo, she has been inpatient for 25+ days at each admission.
Earlier today, Matney was told "something big was happening today."
"[We] had no idea it would be Taylor!" said Matney's mom.
Swift had to keep her distance from Matney because was in isolation but during the five-minute visit, Matney was gifted a concert hoodie and Swift's new book (both autographed).
Matney will be undergoing a bone marrow transplant in the coming weeks.
"This is a long, hard fight ahead but Matney is a strong, faithful fighter," said her mom. "Our mantra is 'Faith Over Fear'."
