MARSHFIELD, Mo. — One of two Marshfield teens accused of stabbing a man in June 2023 has pleaded guilty to reduced charges.
Online court documents show that charges for Thomas Keith Smith, Jr. were reduced under a plea agreement. He is now charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter, unlawful use of a weapon and tampering with physical evidence.
Smith was originally charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in 2023 after a stabbing left 52-year-old Shawn Ellingburg dead inside a Marshfield home.
Documents show Smith and a second teen, Alissa Rose Staples, were arrested and charged in connection with Ellingburg's death. Staples is charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action and is due to appear for a jury trial starting on May 12, 2025.
Following his guilty plea, Smith is scheduled to be back in court on Feb. 14, 2025 for sentencing.
