Roughly four years ago, Missouri American Water wanted to find a cause fit for the holidays.
They found that in Fostering Hope—a local charity that set up the Christmas of Hope initiative that helps provide foster children in the community get the Christmas morning they deserve.
“This has actually turned into a tradition,” said Christie Barnhart, Senior Communications Manager for Missouri American Water. “We start raising funds with a chili cookoff. With the help of IBEW, we get to raffle Chiefs tickets. It’s just a really good way for us to give back to local kids who need to be remembered this time of year.”
This giving season, Missouri American Water raised $2550, with every $50 helping out one child.
“It’s just a lot of fun,” Barnhart said to KZRG. “Everybody here at Missouri American Water, we all love kids. We want an opportunity to give back and it’s great that we can give back locally. There are so many kids here in the foster care system and we want them to know that we care about them and they are important.”
Wednesday is the big day, when Fostering Hope officials join up at Joplin’s 15th Street Walmart for the Christmas of Hope Shopping Day, purchasing the toys on the Christmas lists of the local foster children.
If you would like to volunteer this Wednesday, you do not have to sign up. Just go to the garden center at the 15th Street Walmart before 9 a.m. and check in.
