Missouri lawmaker proposes banning guns at parades after KC Chiefs rally shooting

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - A Missouri lawmaker recently introduced a bill to prohibit the carrying of firearms into parades. The proposal comes as a response to the mass shooting at the Kansas City Chief's victory rally in February.

Democratic Rep. Anthony Ealy of Jackson County proposed the bill that would require those attending a parade hosted by the state or city to go through security checkpoints with metal detectors or scanners.

The bill would prohibit anyone with a firearm, even with a valid concealed carry permit, except for police, from entering the parade.

According to the proposal, anyone who enters a parade route and knowingly has a firearm will face possible charges of unlawful use of a weapon.

Ealy proposed this bill in response to the fatal shooting at the Kansas City Chief's parade on February 14, when one woman was killed and 22 people were injured. Those injured were between the ages of 8 and 47; half of the injured victims were under the age of 16.

Despite over 800 police officers having been on site during the parade, the shooting came after an apparent dispute between two rally attendees.

The proposed bill has been filed for the upcoming 2025 legislative session beginning on January 8.
