SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A bizarre situation unfolded on Monday as three dogs were found on the roof of a home in north Springfield.
Many neighbors and concerned animal lovers stopped by the abandoned house on North Main Street this afternoon to watch the dogs on the roof go in and out of a second-story window. The situation left many wondering where the dog owners were.
Kelsie Richardson lives in the area. She says the whole neighborhood is concerned.
"They're just abandoning these dogs. Everyone out here is calling," says Richardson. "The dogs need help, man. And it's like nobody cares."
Richardson also says that she has been watching the dogs for a while.
"Every time I drive by the dogs are outside," Richardson said. "This one right here is always outside. Nobody lives in this house."
The family that lived in the house abandoned it because there was no heat, and their new residence does not allow animals according to a family friend. That friend also said the family has been coming back to the home to take care of the dogs.
Later in the afternoon, the dog owners did show up. They were very upset with the whole situation and did not want to go on camera.
Animal Control says they have been to the house and are following protocol, which involves posting a written notice and getting a warrant if necessary. Richardson says it is difficult to see the dogs in this situation.
"I love animals. So, yes, it was very emotional," said Richardson. "These dogs are just crying for help. That's it for three days."
