Second suspect in Colin Brown murder case pleads not guilty

ST. LOUIS - There was another big development in the case of the shooting death of 16-year-old high school hockey player Colin Brown.

One of the accused killers, 28-year-old Donovan Baucom, was arrested earlier this week. He says he didn't do it.

Baucom pleaded not guilty in his first appearance in a St. Louis courtroom Thursday. He smiled as loved ones waved to him in court. He couldn't wave back as his hands were cuffed to a chain around his waist during his bond hearing.

His loved ones left court, telling FOX 2 they’d been getting threats since his arrest. They claimed Baucom, the father of 3 young children, was innocent.

So did Baucom.

He faces six felony counts: murder-first degree, three counts of armed criminal action times, assault-first degree, and unlawful use of a weapon, shooting from a moving vehicle.

An errant bullet struck Brown as his father was driving him home from a hockey game along Interstate 55 in south St. Louis on Nov. 23. He died in a hospital days later, an innocent victim of alleged crimes happening in a neighborhood near that stretch of I-55.

Authorities tell FOX 2 multiple police and FBI raids on a side street in that neighborhood helped put together an evidence trail. It led them to Baucom and his cousin, 26-year-old Garrett Jordan, who is also accused of murder in the case.

Multiple suspects face drug and weapons charges in the case. So far, only Baucom and Jordan are charged with murder.

A court document says Baucom claims to have been driving as Jordan was shooting at another driver on the interstate, stemming from an incident on that nearby side street. Baucom’s car was frequently on that street.

Investigators seized two firearms from Baucom, police said. They were being tested to see if they were connected to Brown’s death.

Still, an attorney representing Baucom in court for his initial appearance argued for his release on his own recognizance, saying there was no evidence of motive or premeditation.

“We can’t rush to judgement,” attorney Matt Wayman said.

Judge Heather Hays denied the request and ordered Baucom held without bond.

There were nearly 20 people in the courtroom to support Baucom. A number of them said, “We love you,” as he was led away.

There's no trial date yet. His cousin, Jordan, is due in court for a bond hearing on Monday.
