Sharon Clark: A leader making a difference in the community

AIRPORT DRIVE, Mo. — One thing we're learning while checking in with our past remarkable women winners? They each have an innate drive to help others that keeps them going.

"I believe where you work, that you should be part of the community," said Sharon Clark, Remarkable Woman 2022.

These days you'll find our local 2022 remarkable woman winner, Sharon Clark, in the Village of Airport Drive, where she works part-time as the deputy clerk.

"I want people to know what a loving community I serve in, and you have to get involved if you want it to succeed," said Clark.

The retired postmaster, U.S. veteran, and cancer survivor will sometimes say she's doing less these days, but not really.

"I'm the treasurer of New Hope Church out of Carl Junction, I'm president of Hope 4 You, I serve on the family selection committee for Habitat, and I'm a big basketball fan," said Clark.

Hope 4 You Breast Cancer Foundation's board president remains one of her biggest pride and joys.

"The previous president lost her battle with cancer and she left a little six-year-old boy. I want everyone to be a survivor and not a victim," said Clark.

The year Sharon was named our local remarkable women winner, the COVID-19 pandemic was still lingering.

That meant a virtual gathering of all the winners across the nation.

Nonetheless, the experience was still inspiring.

"I felt like, wow, I am nothing compared to some of these women. It's just unreal to know how many remarkable women there are across the United States," said Clark.

So, it's no surprise, no matter where you find Sharon, she's staying humble while working to help make our community better.

"My dad taught all eight of his children, leave the world a better place. If it's nothing but a smile, if it's to feed them, if it's to make them think about breast cancer -- 'I need to have my examination.' or 'I need to give some money' -- I just want to make a difference. But, remarkable? No. I'm just an ordinary person," said Clark.

Nominations for our next remarkable woman are still being accepted.

The deadline to enter is Friday.
