South county cookie company hit with a cease-and-desist
A local bakery, which creates jobs for those with disabilities, is being told it must change the name of its cookie company from another based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - A local bakery, which creates jobs for those with disabilities, is being told it must change the name of its cookie company from another based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
McArthur Bakery owner Scott Rinaberger says his Smiley Fave Cookie Company has been doing business since 2021 but has been selling smiley face cookies since the 1970s.
"We started a program for adults with disabilities, and that's one of the products that is a god feature product for them to do," Rinaberger said.
But now, a trademark infringement cease-and-desist came from Smiley Cookie, which is based in Pennsylvania, claiming to be the original.
Rinaberger says he can't afford to fight and has considered a name change. But social media posts in support of the St. Louis shop have him reconsidering.
