Teacher and student killed, 6 injured in Wisconsin school shooting
A teacher and a student were killed in a shooting at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, police said Monday afternoon.
MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) - A teacher and a student were killed in a shooting at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, police said Monday afternoon.
The shooting occurred just before 11 a.m. on Monday, the Madison Police Department said. When officers arrived, they found multiple gunshot wound victims, said Madison Police Chief Shon F. Barnes.
The suspected shooter, who police said was a teenage student at the school, was dead when they arrived, Barnes said. He said officers not fire their weapons when they rushed into the school. Barnes suggested the shooter died by suicide.
“They found the person responsible who was down, deceased," the chief said.
Police recovered a handgun at the scene, he added.
A teacher and a teenage student were killed in the shooting. Six others were injured and being treated at the hospital, including two students who were in critical, life-threatening condition.
"But these are just the physical injuries we know about," Barnes said. "There will be other injuries that we have to face for a very, very long time."
During an earlier press conference Monday, police initially said five people had been killed. However, they later clarified that was a mistake.
Authorities said the investigation is active and ongoing.
“More information will be released as it is available. We currently need people to avoid the area," Madison police said in a statement.
Abundant Life Christian School has about 390 students from kindergarten to 12th grade, according to the school's website. This was the last week of school scheduled for the year ahead of the Christmas vacation.
“We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond,” Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement.
In a statement, the White House said President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting and officials were in touch with local authorities to provide support.
