2 students injured, suspected gunman dead in shooting at Northern California school
A suspected gunman was killed after a shooting at Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists in Palermo, Butte County.
(KTXL) -- Two students were shot and the suspected gunman is dead after a shooting at a school in the Northern California community of Palermo, according to the Butte County Sheriff's Office.
The agency said just before 2 p.m. that deputies were at an "active incident involving a shooting" at Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists.
The school is located 10 miles south of Oroville and almost 60 miles north of Sacramento. The school's website says it has been at its current location since 1965, and an update from 2022 says it had just over 30 students.
A spokesperson with the sheriff's office said two students were shot and taken to a hospital, one by helicopter. The suspected gunman is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
The sheriff's office said that students were taken to the Oroville Church of the Nazarene in Oroville and that parents were asked to head to the church to reunite with their children.
The community of Palermo is a census-designated place with a population of nearly 9,500, according to the U.S. Census.
The California Highway Patrol said a nearly three-mile-long stretch of Highway 70 where the school is located was closed and that traffic was being diverted.
