MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) - At least three people are dead and another six were injured in a shooting at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, police said Monday afternoon.

The shooting occurred just before 11 a.m. on Monday, the Madison Police Department said. When officers arrived, they found multiple gunshot wound victims and a "juvenile who they believe is responsible," said Madison Police Chief Shon F. Barnes.

At least one of those killed was a "juvenile person," Barnes said. The suspected shooter, who police said was a student at the school, was among the deceased.

During a press conference Monday, police initially said five people had been killed. However, they later clarified that was a mistake.

Police didn't disclose any additional information on the victims as they worked to inform their families.

Barnes said officers immediately began "life saving efforts" when they arrived on scene. He said "the police department did not fire their weapons."

Authorities said the investigation is active and ongoing. More information was expected to be released at a 2:30 p.m. press conference.

“More information will be released as it is available. We currently need people to avoid the area," Madison police said in a statement.

Roads in the area are blocked off. Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have also responded to the scene to assist local law enforcement.

Abundant Life Christian School has about 390 students from kindergarten to 12th grade, according to the school's website. This was the last week of school scheduled for the year ahead of the Christmas vacation.

“We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond,” Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement.
