Crosswalk upgrades coming to Commercial Street District

SPRINGFIELD -- The City of Springfield is set to begin a series of crosswalk reconstructions in the Commercial Street Historic District starting Monday, July 28.

The upgrades will stretch from Boonville Avenue to Benton Avenue and are aimed at improving aesthetics, durability, and accessibility.

The project will involve replacing existing stamped asphalt surfaces with more durable concrete. According to the city, this change will not only enhance the historic district’s appearance but also simplify long-term maintenance and ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Work will begin at the intersections of Commercial Street and Boonville Avenue, as well as Commercial Street and Jefferson Avenue. From there, crews will continue eastward.

The city’s contractor, KCI, will work to minimize disruptions by closing only one or two intersections at a time. Each closure is expected to last approximately two days, with work beginning early Monday morning and wrapping up by 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials stress that all businesses along Commercial Street will remain open and accessible throughout the construction period. Closures have been carefully scheduled to avoid full detours, though drivers are encouraged to use nearby cross streets to navigate around work zones.

The total cost of the improvements is estimated at $150,000, funded through the County Road and Bridge Tax Fund. The project is expected to be completed by fall.
