FENTON, Mo. - A steady stream of carboard-carrying customers paraded into the UPS store on Old Smizer Mill Road in Fenton Wednesday morning. Not everyone we met was on a merry mission, but Paul Volz was.
“Shipping some shirts to my son for Christmas. Hopefully he gets them in time,” Volz said.
His son lives in an area of North Carolina where infrastructure was damaged by Hurricane Helene.
“Even if there’s some delays because of the roads the way they are out there from the hurricane, it’ll get there by Tuesday or Wednesday. It’s supposed to be there Friday, but a couple extra days never hurts,” he added.
Store manager Angie Frick is working her 21st holiday season at UPS. She says online shopping and shipping have changed the way many people send gifts.
“A lot more returns. A lot of Amazon’s. A lot of people with presents. That’s never going to change, but online shopping has definitely taken over," she said. “We do see a lot of people who’re in the holiday spirit. Our customers are great."
If you are planning to ship a gift domestically and want it to arrive before Christmas, here are UPS’ deadlines:
- Dec. 19: Three Day Select
- Dec. 20: Second Day Air
- Dec. 23: Next Day Air
The staff here, and there are more of them this time of year, tells us they’re ready for the last-minute rush.
“I feel like when it’s this fast-paced, you don’t have time to stop and think. We all stay pretty organized. We’re all helping each other out. We’re all jumping in to help customers,” Frick said.
With his shipment packed and paid for, Paul Volz has one less thing on his holiday to-do list.
“Hopefully it all makes it there and everyone’s happy,” he said.
