Lincoln County man helps trapped teen in overturned SUV

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. - Toby Collier isn’t sure why, but he had a feeling he should go pick up parts for his business last Friday, even though it’s work always done by other employees.
“It hasn’t stopped crossing my mind that something bigger than me was asking me to go in this direction,” he said.
The direction he traveled was near Highway 94 and Interstate 64 in St. Charles County. Collier saw an overturned Kia with a trapped teen inside.
“I saw debris all over the entire highway,” he said.
Collier said drivers kept going by while he stopped to help.
“I noticed more people were taking pictures and video than actually getting out to assist and make sure she was okay,” he said.
He said the teen was unable to escape the vehicle on her own.
“I went over to the passenger door and ripped the door open, ripped the airbag out, and helped pull her out,” Collier said.
A nurse stopped to help while Collier notified the teen’s mother. He shared the news her daughter was okay but did not go into all the details.
“I didn’t want her to overworry and possibly end up in the same situation,” Collier said. “I’ve got kids; I know how it feels.”
On Monday, the teen’s mother expressed her gratitude and called for all drivers to use more caution.
Witnesses said the SUV overturned four times. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports another vehicle struck the SUV after failing to yield and changing lanes in an unsafe manner. A spokesperson for the patrol said the driver of that vehicle had been cited for careless and imprudent driving.
The teen’s mother is busy caring for her daughter’s recovery but plans on thanking Collier again in the future. On Tuesday, he said the hug he received at the scene of the crash expressed all the gratitude he needed.
"I knew what it was,” said Collier. “It was, 'thank you for being with my child.'”
