MORGAN COUNTY, Mo. - A Missouri couple allegedly attempted to perform a do-it-yourself circumcision on a child without proper medical training, leading to the child being hospitalized and the couple facing felony charges.
The Morgan County Prosecuting Attorney's Office has charged Tyler Wade Gibson, 35, and Bailey Alexus Gibson, 32, with one count of child abuse each amid the investigation, while Tyler also faces a felony charge of unathorized practice of medicine or surgery.
According to court documents obtained by FOX 2, hopsital workers and law enforcement were informed of a botched circumcision involving a child around November 27, 2024, in Morgan County. The investigation led authorities to the Gibsons' home.
Court documents state that Tyler told authorities that he performed the circumcision with a "utility tool." Asked if he was medically trained, Tyler replied "no," but noted that he conducted research and prayed for a blessing before attempting the procedure, per court documents.
Tyler reportedly acknowledged that he "wasn't prepared for the amount of bleeding," prompting the couple to take the child to the hospital.
Bailey, also questioned, told authorities that she assisted with the procedure, but expressed hesitancy and uncertainty about performing a circumcision. When asked why they proceeded despite her reservations, she did not provide an answer, per court documents.
Tyler was arrested shortly after questioning on Nov. 28, while Bailey was arrested one day later.
Court documents expressly state on the circumcision, "The procedure did not go as planned." The child received treatment from a urologist and was hospitalized after experiencing significant blood loss.
Court documents also allege that Bailey left the hospital "against medical advice" after four hours attending to the child because she "grew tired of waiting."
Tyler has a counsel status hearing scheduled for Jan. 21, 2025, while Bailey has an arraignment hearing scheduled for Jan. 28, 2025, according to Missouri court records. Both were booked into jail in Morgan County on a $25,000.
If convicted, Tyler could face up to 17 years in prison, and Bailey could face up to 10 years behind bars.
