COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — The Montgomery County attorney will not file charges against any of the Coffeyville police officers involved in a deadly shooting in August.
In a report released this week, Melissa Johnson said there wasn’t enough evidence to support filing charges in the incident. On August twenty-ninth, officers pulled over thirty-three-year-old Derik Trotter of Coffeyville, who they were looking for in connection to an active investigation.
Officers say as they tried to place him in handcuffs, he fought back and tried to escape. They say he got into a physical altercation with them, forcing them to deploy their tasers.
Then, when he continued to be combative, yelled "shoot me" several times, and even grabbed one of the officer's rifles, that officer fired shots at Trotter. Investigators say despite being wounded, he advanced at the officers again and tried to grab the gun again. That’s when the officer fired again. Trotter died at a local hospital.
