SEK Area Agency on Aging needing volunteer drivers for senior meal program

FORT SCOTT, Kan. — A Southeast Kansas organization is looking for the help of the community to bring warm meals to those 60 and older.

The Southeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging is looking for drivers for its 60 Plus Nutrition Program. For years, the meal program hasn’t received any significant increase in funding from the state. Due to this, volunteers are used to help keep costs under control for the agency and for participants.

Since the program decided to prepare meals in Fort Scott for delivery, current volunteers who are 60-plus chose to retire. That’s why it’s asking for volunteer drivers in the area to pick up prepared meals from the Buck Run Community Center and deliver them to individuals on a designated route.

"They feel like they’re part of their family, and it’s sometimes the only people that they see. So for the financial piece of it, volunteers are what help us maintain our programs. And then for the social piece, it’s such a joy for our seniors to get to see other seniors bringing them," said Stacy Dickerhoof, Southeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging associate director.

To volunteer, you must complete a background check and fill out an application. Applications can be picked up at or by calling the AAA office in Pittsburg or Chanute.
