SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The story of the three dogs on the roof of a north Springfield home continues as the owner speaks out.
She explained to Ozarksfirst that the dogs are still in the home and that they had been for two weeks.
“My house is in very poor condition, and it's not safe for our family to stay there anymore. And so we've been living in a motel to stay warm and stay safe,” says the owner of the dogs.
On Monday, concerned neighbors and members of the Springfield community stopped at a house on North Main Avenue to look at three dogs standing on the roof of a home. The family that lived in the house had to leave because the house had no heat.
Many were concerned that the dogs and the home were abandoned. The owner says the dogs are being looked out for, but they can't take them to where they live now.
“I'm trying to keep them in my home and trying to keep them safe from the elements as much as I can because where I'm staying currently, I don’t have space to bring them with me and my children and my husband.”
People aware of the situation have said the owner should give them up to a shelter. The owner says her family cannot afford the surrender fees and they have contacted animal control.
“Any time I've tried to contact them about what I should do, they told me that they had no space for the dogs to take them.”
She also says that since the dogs got on the roof yesterday people have begun to trespass on her property.
"There was already a woman there who my friend had to stop once from breaking into my home. And this was all within an hour of a Facebook post being posted online. People are already showing up trying to break into my home.”
The owner explained that there have been multiple attempts to stop dogs from getting on the roof.
Ozarksfirst has contacted Animal Control about the situation but has not heard back.
