ST. CLAIR, Mo. – A card skimmer found at a gas station pump over the weekend in Franklin County has police investigating.

A driver pulled up to a Casey’s General Store gas pump around 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning when she noticed the keypad seemed strange. She told an employee, who then contacted police.

According to St. Clair Police Chief Michael Wirt, the customer said the keypad buttons felt weird when she tried to use her card.

Police didn’t find wires connected to anything and didn’t think the keypad was being used for skimming information, but they’re advising anyone who stopped at the Casey’s location to monitor their bank account for any suspicious activity.

“Normally I try and look, but they’re so good nowadays that you don’t know what to look for,” resident Ashley Holden said.

Tina Reeves added, “I definitely know what to look out for…I think I might notice if something seemed out of place or seemed odd.”

Wirt added the case is still being investigated.

“Make sure (the pump) doesn’t look like it’s been tampered with,” he said. “Make sure there aren’t any wires showing. Any type of devices that don’t belong—report those. Keep track of your card statements and your online bank statements.”
