Rain relief giving way to blistering heat

We finally broke the dry streak in Springfield with overnight storms bringing some much-needed rain to the city. The airport picked up 0.08" of rainfall, the first measurable rainfall since July 18th. The pattern will support additional opportunities over the next couple of days before it dries out and heats up again.

Showers and thunderstorms this evening will gradually shift east, likely winding down by midnight. Areas near and west of a Harrison to Rolla line should have the best chance to enjoy some of this rainfall. The rest of the night looks pretty quiet with most areas remaining dry.

Tuesday should offer up another shot at scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and evening. It likely won't be as hot as recent days thanks to clouds and increased rain chances. Some areas will still get into the 90s, though, especially south of the interstate.

Wednesday will be our transition day as we head back into a hot and dry mode. A boundary dropping south through the area on Wednesday will tend to focus the better chance of scattered showers to the south, mainly closer to and south of the state line.

The summer blister will settle back in as we end the week and push through the weekend. The summer ridge that's been migrating back and forth across the nation will shift east again into the middle of the nation. Look for excessive heat to redevelop with highs back in the mid-90s on Friday. Mid to upper 90s will bake the area through the weekend with "feels like" temperatures topping 100°. Little to no rain will accompany the developing heatwave.

The long-range pattern is looking more promising, though. The summer ridge should shift back into the West with a trough sharpening up across the East. This will open the door for a cool front to dive through the region by the middle of next week. Rain chances will accompany the front, and milder and less humid weather is on the menu for the backend of next week.
