Recording Academy disqualifies rapper J-Kwon from Grammy nod

ST. LOUIS - The Recording Academy is preventing St. Louis rapper J-Kwon from receiving a Grammy Award after removing him as a songwriter on Shaboozey's No. 1 hit song, 'A Bar Song (Tipsy).'

The Recording Academy behind the Grammy Awards made the announcement Thursday and disqualified J-Kwon, whose real name is Jerrell Jones, from receiving an award for Shaboozey's chart-topping song, which interpolates his 2004 hit song, 'Tipsy.' The update also removed Joe Kent and Mark Williams as songwriters, although they were also credited on the 2004 song and listed as songwriters when nominations were initially unveiled on Nov. 8.

According to the Grammy Awards rulebook, 'Recordings featuring samples are eligible in songwriting Categories; however, the writers of the sampled or interpolated material are not considered to be nominees or GRAMMY recipients.'

Shaboozey's 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' was nominated for three awards in the 2025 music ceremony: Song of the Year, Best Country Song, and Best Country Solo Performance. If the song were to win any of the three awards, J-Kwon would instead receive a certificate for his role in the song rather than a Grammy trophy.

In Shaboozey's hit song, the Woodbridge, VA native used parts of the 2004 hit song in the beginning and end of the song’s catchy chorus. “One, here comes the two to the three to the four,” Shaboozey said at the beginning of the chorus. By the end of the hook, Shaboozey says, “Everybody at the bar gettin’ tipsy,” flipping J-Kwon’s hook to include the word ‘bar’ instead of ‘club.'

J-Kwon’s ‘Tipsy’ served as the rapper’s debut single and the song was also featured on his debut album, ‘Hood Hop.’ According to Genius, the song was certified platinum, featured in several movies, and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, only falling behind to Usher’s summer anthem, ‘Yeah.’

According to Spotify, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Country Star Shaboozy was the third most streamed song in the United States in 2024. The song has spent time at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for 19 weeks, tying Lil Nas X’s 2019 hit record ‘Old Town Road’ for the most weeks at No. 1 over the chart’s 66-year history, according to Billboard.

Shaboozey also has two additional Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Melodic Rap Performance for his role in Beyonce's 'SPAGHETTII.'

Shaboozey paid homage to the St. Louis native during a performance at the 2024 BET Awards in June. When the country artist was beginning to finish his version, Shaboozey surprised the crowd and brought J-Kwon out as a special guest, giving the duo the opportunity to perform the two versions of the song together.
