REYNOLDS COUNTY, Mo. - Saturday marks 19 years since the collapse of the Taum Sauk Reservoir in southeast Missouri.
On Dec. 14, 2005, a massive wall of water poured down Profit Mountain as a 700-foot section of the Taum Sauk Dam gave way, pouring water into Johnson's Shut-In State Park.
Fortunately, the campground had no visitors. But a park ranger, his wife and their three kids suffered injuries when they were swept from their home by the raging water.
The water washed away most of the area's vegetation. It took five years of restoration before Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park could reopen.
Ameren Missouri, Taum Sauk's owner paid $500 million to help with that restoration.
