REPORT: Battlehawks coach Anthony Becht interviews for college job, also drawing NFL interest

ST. LOUIS - Anthony Becht, after two seasons as the head coach of the St. Louis Battlehawks, could emerge as a candidate for new coaching jobs in college football and the National Football League, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter.

As of Monday, Becht has reportedly interviewed for a head coach position with the West Virginia Mountaineers football program in college football's Big 12 conference.

West Virginia parted ways with head coach Neal Brown last week after six seasons.

Becht has compiled a 14-6 record over his last two seasons with the Battlehawks, stepping into head coaching duties in 2023, when the XFL was reincarnated after pandemic-altered setbacks. He coached the Battlehawks to their first playoff bid last season, after the XFL merged with the USFL to become the United Football League, though that campaign ended with a first-round playoff loss.

Becht has often promoted the spring football leagues as leagues "of opportunitity" or platforms for aspiring professional football players to seize second chances and prepare for potential NFL opportunities.

Under his leadership, excitement around the Battlehawks has grown significantly over the past two seasons. The Battlehawks have helped 24 players earn NFL training camp opportunities under Becht. St. Louis is also the only spring football team in the United States to draw a crowd of at least 40,000 fans.

With Becht presumably interviewing for a lead position at West Virginia, the question becomes how he wants to steer his football coaching career. In the case he joined the Mountaineers program, he would also take on more recruiting duties in addition to his gameday preparations. It would also give him an opportunity to work with younger players who could be developed and drafted into an NFL setting.

In August, Becht told NBC's Pro Football Talk that he intended to coach the Battlehawks for the 2025 UFL season.

However, Becht recently expressed that he was “interested in talking about any job,” including the West Virginia head coaching vacancy, according to remarks from the Wolf and Luke Show.

The UFL employs coaches on a season-by-season basis, which provides flexibility for coaches to explore other opportunities during the offseason while maintaining their commitment to the league.

It's unclear how soon a decision may materialize in West Virginia's coaching search. With a bowl game on hand, the Mountaineers will turn to Chad Scott on an interim basis to close their 2024 season.

Schefter's report on Becht also noted that he had "received inquiries" about coaching at the NFL level, though it's unclear from how many teams, which ones, and if these would be head coaching roles.

Meanwhile, the 2025 UFL season is set to begin on March 28, with the first preseason workouts presumably beginning in February or early-March.
