REPORTS: Former Cardinals MVP Paul Goldschmidt agrees to deal with Yankees
After six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, including a 2022 MVP campaign, veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt will reportedly join the New York Yankees.
NEW YORK - After six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, including a 2022 MVP campaign, veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt will reportedly join the New York Yankees.
ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Saturday morning that Goldschmidt has agreed to a one-year, $12.5 million contract with the Yankees.
Goldschmidt will presumably take over at first base for last season's American League champions, joining a lineup with stars like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Anthony Volpe.
The Cardinals signaled near the end of the 2024 campaign that Goldschmidt's time with St. Louis was likely coming to an end, doubling down on the decision by not to extend a one-year qualifying offer.
The Cardinals are instead trying to focus on a youth-driven reset that include reducing payroll for next season and focusing on player development. The approach could also lead to the Cardinals moving veteran third baseman Nolan Arenado in the upcoming weeks.
Goldschmidt finished with 153 home runs, 477 RBI and a .278 batting average over six seasons with the Cardinals.
