Shaboozey's 'Bar Song' samples St. Louis native J-Kwon's 2004 hit 'Tipsy'

ST. LOUIS - Country star Shaboozey burst onto the music scene in 2024 after dropping his hit song, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)," in April. Since its release, the song has received high praise among listeners and has led the charts, but did you know that the song samples elements from a St. Louis native's 2004 hit song?

Shaboozey's chart-topping single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)" featured an interpolation of J-Kwon’s 2004 hit song ‘Tipsy,' transforming the 2004 club anthem into a country-style melody. Shaboozey used parts of the 2004 hit song in the beginning and end of the song's chorus.

"One, here comes the two to the three to the four," the Fairfax, VA native said at the beginning of the chorus. The verse was infamously used by J-Kwon in his hit song but could also be traced back to the opening verse on The D.O.C.'s 1989 track, 'It's Funky Enough.' By the end of the hook, Shaboozey says, "Everybody at the bar gettin' tipsy," flipping J-Kwon's hook to include the word 'bar' instead of 'club,' creating a fun yet relatable experience for listeners.

J-Kwon's 'Tipsy' served as the rapper's debut single and the song was also featured on his debut album, 'Hood Hop.' The hit song garnered a lot of success on the airways. According to Genius, the song was certified platinum, was featured in several movies, and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, only falling behind to Usher's summer anthem, 'Yeah.'

According to Spotify, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Country Star Shaboozy was the third most streamed song in the United States and the most played song in St. Louis in 2024. The song has spent time at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for 19 weeks, tying Lil Nas X’s 2019 hit record ‘Old Town Road’ for the most weeks at No. 1 over the chart’s 66-year history, according to Billboard.

Shaboozey paid homage to the St. Louis native during a performance at the 2024 BET Awards in June. When the country artist was beginning to finish his version, Shaboozey surprised the crowd and brought J-Kwon out as a special guest, giving the duo the opportunity to perform the two versions of the song together.
