SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The City of Springfield has taken a step forward in its pursuit of professional soccer.

During Monday's meeting, Springfield City Council unanimously agreed on a measure to sign a letter of intent with the United Soccer League (USL), committing to negotiate to potentially bring professional men's and women's soccer teams to Springfield.

A formal announcement will be made on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Traffickway and National, which is the proposed site of a potential new stadium.

“We are incredibly excited about the potential opportunity to bring both USL men’s and women’s teams to Springfield,” says Justin Papadakis, USL Deputy Chief Executive Officer. “The City has a rich soccer culture and a passionate community of sports fans that aligns with the USL’s vision of growing the sport at all levels. We are committed to working closely with the City of Springfield to explore how we can contribute to the community’s vibrant future through professional soccer.”

The City of Springfield will now conduct a study analyzing the viability of bringing professional soccer to the city. The City Council is considering sharing the cost of feasibility research with the USL to evaluate potential funding and discussing a possible collaboration on a new multi-purpose sports and entertainment stadium at 1109 E. Trafficway St. near Hammons Field.

“We believe this partnership could elevate Springfield’s sports landscape, provide new entertainment options, and drive significant economic and community benefits,” said Amanda Ohlensehlen, Director of Economic Vitality and Workforce Department.

The United Soccer League has operated since 1986 and has several professional and semi-pro teams in more than 200 communities in the country across three men's leagues and two women's leagues.
