University of Arkansas students react to fraternity's suspension for hazing allegations
The University of Arkansas has another fraternity accused of hazing members among other allegations and students are reacting to the news.
FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. (KNWA/KFTA) — Another University of Arkansas fraternity has been suspended over for hazing members among other allegations and students are reacting to the news.
Blakely Pope is a student at the University of Arkansas. She knows that one fraternity was already suspended, and now there's another one. Pope thinks this should not be a recurring issue.
"I really just don't think hazing is right. I really think that they shouldn't do it. This should just be about finding your community and finding your people, and that's just not really a way to get to know people. It just shouldn't be common in sorority and fraternity life. And I just don't think the University of Arkansas should allow hazing here," said Pope.
There is a history of hazing allegations on campus, especially in fraternities within the past year. In 2023, Pi Kappa Alpha was suspended for hazing amongst other allegations.
Now in 2024, Pi Gamma Delta (Fiji) is suspended for three years following hazing allegations.
Andrew Leveer is a student who does recruitment for a faith-based fraternity on campus. He thinks pledgeship is about getting out of your comfort zone and bonding with your brothers. Leveer doesn't believe in hazing them.
"When it comes to the cost of someone. That cost far outweighs any benefit, whether it's harmful to them, whether it's embarrassing, or whatever it is. There's just so much more you know, I guess a lot of times people say that they're looking for brotherhood and unity in a fraternity, and so there's such a better way to pursue that," said Leveer.
"Nothing is going to come at the expense, that it's not going to hurt you and it's not going to force you into doing something that you don't want to do or something that's going to be embarrassing or something you'll regret," said Leveer.
KNWA/FOX24 submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the university for more information on the suspension of Fiji but have not heard back.
This is a developing story. Stay with KNWA/FOX24 for updates.
