We're all saying Daniel Craig's name wrong

(NEXSTAR) — His name may no longer be "Bond, James Bond," but former 007 Daniel Craig is setting the record straight about how to pronounce his name. This may come as a surprise, seeing as Craig's name doesn't seem all that odd.
Nevertheless, the 56 year-old actor, currently starring in Luca Guadagnino's latest film "Queer," lightheartedly addressed the issue during an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on Monday, Dec. 2.
"I have a bone to pick with you," Craig told Colbert. The actor then challenged the late-night host to "say my name." When Colbert responded by pronouncing Craig's surname like "Cray-g," the actor responded, "Oh, now you're doing it right."
According to Craig, Colbert had previously pronounced the surname as most Americans would: "Cregg." Craig proceeded to explain that his surname contains a diphthong, which Merriam-Webster defines as "a gliding speech sound that starts at or near the articulatory position for one vowel and moves to or toward the position of another."
Language tutor and training resource Preply says there are generally eight blended vowel sounds (which might be an easier way of remember what "diphthong" means). Here are a few examples.
- "Clown," "town" — Here the "o" and the "w" blend into one another, making a sound akin to an "o" followed by a "u"
- "Joy," "toy" — Here the mouth makes the sound like "oy" or "oi"
- "Music," "student" — Preply explains this diphthong is made by fusing a "subtle 'y' sound followed by 'oo,' as in 'food'"
Daniel Craig's last name isn't the only celebrity name people often get wrong. Let's test you with a few. Make your guess and then highlight the blacked-out text to reveal the correct pronunciation.
- Steve Buscemi = STEEV boo-SEM-ee
- Rihanna = ree-ANNE-uh
- Charlize Theron = shar-LEEZ THER-in
- Ralph Fiennes = RAYF FINES
You can see Daniel "Cray-g" in "Queer" starting Dec. 13 in theaters nationwide. The film is the latest release from Italian auteur Luca Guadagnino, whose most recent film "Challengers" was released earlier this year.
