ST. LOUIS - Garrett Jordan, a 26-year-old man out on parole, faces six felony charges in the shooting death of CBC High School student Colin Brown last month.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office formally filed the following charges against Jordan on Friday in connection with Brown's death

  • One count of first-degree murder
  • Three counts of armed criminal action
  • One count of first-degree assault
  • One count of unlawful use of a weapon

The charges come after weeks of mystery surrounding Brown’s death from a random bullet while riding home from a hockey game on Interstate 55 in St. Louis.

As some people were beginning to give up hope about getting answers in the interstate shooting, a cooperation of police on both the local and federal level were putting together an evidence trail using witnesses, shell casings, and Real Time Crime Center cameras.

Court records indicate the shooting is linked to a scene on Minnesota Avenue, where FOX 2 showed exclusive video of police and FBI activity earlier this week.

Police say it was a drug deal gone wrong that led to the firing of at least 20 shots onto I-55 that November night. But instead of the intended target being struck, an innocent passenger riding by, Colin Brown, was struck in the neck and later died.

Chief Rober Tracy said, “It shows some people don’t have regard for human life out there.”

Police and prosecutors held a news conference Friday following Jordan's charges. At this time, only Jordan has been formally charged in the investigation.

Prosecutor Gabe Gore said, “These charges were issued after an extensive investigation, really remarkable collaboration and investigation between investigative agencies.”

Charging documents allege that Jordan was recently paroled from federal prison where he was serving time for a gun charge. He was captured with the help of St. Louis County Police, the FBI, and Illinois State Police.

ISP Director Brendan Kelly said, “When there is such a senseless, unfathomable loss of life, there must be an answer for it, and the officers of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department have answered.”

Jordan has a federal rap sheet dating back to 2017 with a drug charge when he was still a teenager.

Then, in 2019, he was charged and later pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a gun.

Court records also indicate Jordan was arrested for violating his supervised release in February of this year. He was then released again - on supervision.

It’s interesting to note that defendant Jordan was being electronically monitored during his release, which court records say helped crack this case.

The investigation is not over. Police believe there was another shooter or shooter, and prosecutors have also charged three other people who they believe were involved in an alleged drug deal leading up to the shooting.
