Whoopie Pie Waddle II – 5K to support new recovery program for women

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Whoopie Pie Waddle II, a 5K run/walk to support a new recovery program for women, is being held at Forest Park in Springfield.

Compass Recovery and Joey's Deli have teamed up to raise funds for the Michael J. Dias Foundation to open a women’s sober home in the community. The foundation was created in memory of Michael J. Dias, a Ludlow native who passed away at a young age due to substance addiction. In his memory, the foundation has been committed to providing housing in Springfield for men in the beginning stages of recovery.

In June of 2024, the foundation launched its Capital Campaign with the goal of building a sober home specifically for women. The goal to raise $500,000 will help house at least 16 women, as well as hire staff and handle additional startup costs. The foundation has reached nearly $250,000 with the support of local businesses and community members.

On May 18th, Whoopie Pie Waddle II kicks off at 9 a.m. in Springfield's Forest Park. Proceeds from the event are being put towards the Michael J. Dias Foundation’s mission. The entry fee is $40 for the run or $25 for the walk. To register, visit compassrecoverytreatment.com.

The Bureau of Substance Addiction Services reported over 17,000 emergency room visits last year due to substance abuse. They also reported that around 30% of people who receive services are women.
