Woman dead as police shoot armed man in Jefferson County

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. – Law enforcement shot and wounded an armed man wearing body armor on Highway 67 in Jefferson County on Sunday. A woman was found dead at the scene after the armed individual was subdued.
Festus Police Chief Doug Wendel said they first received word of shots fired at a fast food eatery on Highway A near Interstate 55 around 11:10 a.m. Officers from Festus and the Crystal City Police Departments found the suspect's truck attempting to turn south from Highway A onto Highway 67.
Wendel said the truck struck a concrete median and wound up in the northbound lane. The chief said the driver stepped out of the truck wearing body armor and was armed.
Two Crystal City officers shot the individual while exchanging gunfire.
According to Crystal City Police Chief Chad Helms, the suspect had more than one firearm. Both Crystal City officers were unharmed during the incident. The total number of shots fired remains unclear.
Law enforcement discovered a woman's body inside the suspect's truck after the suspect was injured. Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak said investigators believe the woman was already dead prior to the shootout.
