JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. – On Tuesday, investigators identified a woman found dead inside a pickup truck after Crystal City police officers shot and wounded a man this past weekend on a Jefferson County highway.
She has been identified as Clara B. Blaxton, 45, of northeast Arkansas.
Blaxton is believed to have been in a relationship with the suspect.
According to Grant Bissell, a spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, “her cause and manner of death are still under investigation.”
Festus Police Chief Doug Wendel said they first received word of shots fired near a White Castle on Highway A near Interstate 55 around 11:10 a.m. on Sunday. Officers from Festus and the Crystal City Police Departments found the suspect’s truck attempting to turn south from Highway A onto Highway 67.
Festus and Crystal City officers tracked down the suspect’s truck, which they say crashed into a concrete median on Highway 67 before spinning into the northbound lanes outside of an Aldi and Dollar Tree. The chief said the driver stepped out of the truck wearing body armor and was armed.
Two Crystal City officers shot the suspect.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken to an area hospital where he’s listed in critical condition.
Bissell said the county’s investigation is continuing with assistance from law enforcement in Arkansas and the FBI.
