Commerce fatal fire started in kitchen

COMMERCE, Okla. – The cause of a fatal house fire in Ottawa County remains under investigation, but a state Fire Marshal report shed some light on the investigation.

Elizabeth Duffell, 60, of Commerce, died Dec. 9 in a house fire in the 400 block of North Elm Street. The initial call was that the house exploded and caught on fire. Reportedly, the back wall of the home blew out.

An Oklahoma State Fire Marshal Fire investigation report stated, "(T)he kitchen interior is the area of origin."

The report continues that the "first fuel ignited is natural gas" and "the ignition source is undetermined at this time."

The cause and classification of the fire are undetermined at this time unless or until more data and physical evidence are learned or obtained, the two-page report states.

The report states that the estimated loss is $75,000.
