Illinois Route 3 shut down after person shot, driver in critical condition
One person was shot Tuesday morning on Illinois Route 3 in East St. Louis.
EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. - A shooting on a busy Illinois highway has left one person fighting for their life.
According to investigators with the Illinois State Police, the shooting happened around 9:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Illinois Route 3 near its meeting point with Interstate 55/64.
The driver who was shot drove to East St. Louis City Hall for help after being shot on the highway. The driver remains in critical condition at the hospital. A passenger in the vehicle had injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police are still trying to piece together what happened, as they have more questions than answers.
At one point, the highway was shut down for hours as authorities investigated.
Police are unsure what led up to the incident or if the victim knew the shooter. However, police believe the incident is an isolated case.
