Lane closure on I-44 overnight for project

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Just one week after I-44 shut down between Kansas Expressway and West Bypass in north Springfield, drivers are finding some additional lane closure tonight.
Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, July 18, contractor crews are closing the westbound lane of I-44 to replace the pavement as part of the Forward 44: Springfield Improvements project in Greene County.
The closure will last until 6 a.m. Saturday morning, July 19. There are no signed detours, so drivers are encouraged to find a different route.
Eastbound I-44 and the left lane of westbound I-44 will be in a head-to-head configuration with a median separating the two lanes.
Highway 65 ramps will be closed for safety reasons.
More I-44 closures are expected in the future. The over-80-million-dollar project is expected to be completed in May of 2027.
The I-44 corridor upgrades in Greene County include pavement rebuild, lane widening, bridge replacement, a sound wall, pedestrian underpass, and resurfacing along the I-44 corridor in the Springfield area to improve capacity between Kansas Expressway and U.S. Route 65.
