ST. LOUIS - There are some lane closures this weekend that may impact travel for drivers in north St. Louis County. It's a big deal for people on both sides of a river and the commute into the Granite City area this week.
One lane of eastbound Interstate 270 will close 7 p.m. Friday between Lilac Avenue and Riverview Drive with IDOT's first phase of diverting traffic onto the new eastbound corridor, crating traffic in the north regions into Illinois.
Simultaneously on Sunday, IDOT will actually move travel to the new Mississippi River Bridge, marking the first phase of a joint project between MoDOT and IDOT.
All traffic should be back to normal Monday in time for the morning commute.
The nearly $500 million project is replacing two bridges on Interstate 270 along the Mississippi River in Madison County.
“This project is only the latest improvement to come from a historically beneficial partnership between MoDOT and IDOT,” MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger said in a release. “This bridge is a critical connection into the northern part of the St. Louis metropolitan region and a key link in the national freight network. We’re thrilled to work together to meet this milestone and keep this project on track to deliver another benefit to the region.”
According to a press release, the construction has just reached the halfway point for the south span.
The project is expected to be completed in 2026.
