ASH GROVE, Mo. — A .22 rifle is a great starter gun for anyone looking to get into hunting or just enjoy some target shooting for fun.
Anyone interested in learning the basics of owning and shooting a .22 rifle can sign up for the free “Learning to Shoot: Rifle – Beginner” program on Sept. 13 at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Andy Dalton Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center.
The class runs from 8:30–11 a.m. at the range, which is located near Ash Grove at 4897 N. Greene County Farm Road 61. Registration is available here.
The Sept. 13 program will cover rifle parts, loading, firing, unloading, and basic principles of firearms safety.
With its low recoil, a .22 lets beginners concentrate on key marksmanship skills like breath control, trigger control, and sight alignment — skills that can help improve accuracy and make shooting larger-caliber rifles more enjoyable.
Participants bringing their own rifles should keep all firearms — including concealed carry handguns — secure in their vehicles until the classroom portion of the program is complete and it’s time to head to the shooting range. No live ammunition, loaded firearms, or uncased guns are allowed inside the classroom.
