ST. LOUIS – MetroLink is implementing new security measures with gates and fencing at stops.

“This is about time—we’ve needed this for a long time,” Kevin Scott, the general manager of security at Bi-State Development, said. “We just want to make sure you’re moving forward with a real gating system that works and speaks to true security. You’re not going to easily climb over or under, and we’re providing true security impact.”

The new 8 foot fencing and secured gates are located at both the entrance and exit. Emmerson Park and Jackie Joyner-Kersee MetroLink stations first received the upgrades in September as part of Metro’s Secure Platform Plan.

“The configuration of the mesh and the fences is not easily manipulated. Graphite gates with the roto-gates and ADA-compliant gates—these speak to security and are weather-resistant," Scott added.

Other stations next to receive the gates include the Delmar Loop, Forest Park-DeBaliviere, Central West End, Cortex, Grand, Union Station, and Civic Center.

“I would say this is the first time in the United States you’ve seen a completely open light rail system become completely secured,” Scott said. “There are a number of properties across the United States watching what we’re doing.”

Metro public safety workers will be on location to manually operate the gates until the new fare collection system is installed.

Customers need to show the security officer their valid pass or transit ticket to get through the gate and onto the MetroLink platform.
