Parsons shooting suspect released after shooting into occupied home

PARSONS, Kan. — A juvenile suspect is arrested but later released after police said they hit a residence with multiple gunshots.

It happened late Sunday evening when Parsons Police first learned of a shooting in the 1300 block of Stevens Ave. Though there were no injuries, the home at the scene was hit by multiple rounds of gunfire.

Investigators say they were able to determine the identification of the shooter thanks to eyewitnesses and information gathered at the location. The suspects involved were reportedly all juveniles but only one was brought into Juvenile Intake for processing and questioning.

After questioning, the alleged shooter was released. Officials say according to the Kansas Detention Assessment point system, authorities could not authorize the juvenile's placement in juvenile detention. That juvenile was turned over to a guardian and place back into the community, per state guidelines, the department said.

Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks lamented the KDAI system's ruling as "an ineffective broad-based, non-descript point system," and emphasized a need for an approach that will "hold individuals accountable."

Charges for criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied dwelling and criminal damage to property were sent to the prosecuting attorney's office. Additional charges may be included later.
